Honda Not Commenting on Hybrid Report:Posted By: Tom Braswell Wed Feb 22, 5:59 AM ET TOKYO - Honda will start selling a hybrid version of the Fit subcompact as early as 2007, leading Japanese business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Wednesday.Honda Motor Co. spokeswoman Yuriko Yabe declined to confirm the report. Hybrid cars, which run on a gasoline engine and an electric motor to deliver better mileage than conventional cars, are growing in popularity around the world because of concerns about ecology as well as soaring gas prices. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Tokyo-based Honda hopes to vie against Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp., a leading maker of hybrid cars, by offering a cheaper hybrid. The Fit hybrid is expected to sell at about 1.4 million yen ($11,800), about 200,000 yen ($1,600) more than the regular Fit, the report said. Toyota plans to release a hybrid version of the Camry in the spring, targeting 2006 sales of 30,000 hybrid Camrys in the U.S. The price for the hybrid Camry has not been announced, but hybrids on sale now cost about 2 million yen ($16,800). Honda sold 390,000 Fit cars in 2005 around the world and plans to start selling the model in the U.S. this year. Courtesy Of: Yahoo!
